The default gnome-terminal experience in the OpenSolaris install is lacking colors; at least for my personal preferences. But, I just alias my default ls to the gnu version in my bashrc and away we go...
add this to you .bashrc
alias ls='/usr/gnu/bin/ls --color=auto'
